Valentine's Day Switch Up!

Valentine’s Day to me is…
        When interviewed questions about Valentine’s Day, many teenagers said that Valentine’s Day to them was all about love and a day for couples to spend time together but when a Junior from a local high school was asked what the holiday meant to her, she answered a little differently;
“Valentine’s Day is not just a holiday for recognizing individuals in your life that you are romantically involved with, but really any person that you love and care about. The holiday should not just be for couples, but for everyone to have a chance to tell their loved ones that they care about them.”
Many people feel as if the holiday is a commercial holiday geared towards women, while others feel as if the holiday is for both men and women. When a group of girls were interviewed and asked the question, “Do you think Valentine’s Day is aimed towards women or men more?” They responded with saying that the holiday is aimed more towards women because the woman should be spoiled, while a group of men said that the holiday was aimed towards women because that is the way the holiday has always been known to be. Many will argue and say that the holiday is aimed for both because your valentine is the one in which you desire regardless of the gender. An interesting comment was made when teenagers were asked what they expect to receive; many people said chocolates, flowers, teddy bears, ect but a few brought up a new perspective. Valentine’s Day is about showing your loved ones how much you love them, correct? So why would buying them insanely expensive items show your love any more than a homemade craft would?
 “I will be baking for my valentine because it makes things a little more personal.”
 “I would like a gift that truly meant something to me; nothing that had to be bought and was expensive. I would buy something that really showed my love for the other person. I wouldn't do anything they wouldn't enjoy.”
After analyzing the answers I received regarding my questions I’ve come to my conclusion as to what Valentine’s Day is to me. Valentine’s Day is, without a doubt, a special day to show your significant other or someone close to you how much you care for them. Are we expected to buy extreme gifts to show them our love? Is this special day meant for only one gender? No. Valentine’s Day should not be biased and should not be something to stress about. Be creative when picking out, or making, your Valentine’s gift. After all Valentine’s Day began with just a simple love letter.
